Jay Covered Bridge

In 1856, the flooding washed away a covered bridge crossing the East Branch of the Ausable River. The new bridge, known as Jay Covered Bridge, was built in 1857 for $1200 and was left uncovered until 1858.

The bridge unfortunately has a history of being heavily damaged. In 1953, a heavy truck fell through the bridge, causing 80' of the 175' bridge needing to be replaced. Shortly after the bridge was shortened and reinforced. The Howe truss bridge was almost taken off its concrete abutments in 1976 when an ice jam formed on the river. Once again the bridge was damaged in 1985 when a tractor trailer lost its brakes. Jay Covered Bridge was officially closed vehicular traffic in May 1997.

The only remaining covered bridge in Essex County, it is also the Northernmost Covered Bridge in New York State, and one of three Howe truss design covered bridges in New York.
