Covered Bridges of the Northeast

Built in 1841, Gotham Covered Bridge crosses Otter Creek between Pittsfield and Proctor, Vermont. The 114’ bridge is built using town lattice trusses. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. One of four covered bridges in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont.

Cooley covered bridge was built in 1849 and has a slate roof. The town truss bridge crosses the Furnace Creek in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont. The 66' bridge now has iron braces underneath it. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. One of four surviving covered bridges in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont. Hammond Covered Bridge was built in 1842, using town lattice truss construction. Much like the Sanderson Covered Bridge it crosses the Otter Creek. The 139' bridge is the northernmost covered bridge in Pittsford, Vermont. October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024

Sanderson Covered Bridge was built using town lattice truss around 1840. The bridge crosses Otter Creed at 131.5' in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont. In 1974, Sanderson Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The original bridge was dismantled in 2002 and was replaced with a new bridge in 2003, the replacement cost $830,000. A tractor trailer stuck the bridge about a week prior to my visit. Spade Farm Covered Bridge is on private land and is 85.5’, located in Ferrisburgh, Vermont, and was built using town lattice truss. October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024

Crossing over the West Branch Run (which flows into Little Fishing Creek) in Pine Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The queen post truss bridge is 49’ long and was built in 1881, for $332. The bridge is name for a local farmer and lumberman Joseph Shoemaker. The Shoemaker Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. March 8, 2025 March 8, 2025

 Built in 1850, spanning the Muddy Branch of the New Haven River, in Middlebury, Vermont. Halpin Covered bridge is 66' and built using the town lattice truss design.  October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024

 The Seguin Covered Bridge, also known as the Upper Covered Bridge, spans the Lewis Creek, in Charlotte, Vermont. Built in 1850, the Burr arch truss bridge is 71' long. Extensive repairs were done in 1949 and again in 1994. A new roof was installed in 2001 and the latest rehabilitation was in 2016. Built in 1849, Quinlan's Covered Bridge, also known as the Lower Covered Bridge, spans the Lewis Creek, in Charlotte, Vermont. The Burr Arch truss bridge is 86' long, it is one of nine burr arch covered bridges in the state of Vermont. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 1949 or 1950 steel beams were added under the deck to strengthen it and the was under reconstruction in 2013. October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024 October 12, 2024

The Holmes Creek Covered Bridge, also known as the Lakeshore Covered Bridge, stands a short 8' 3". spans the Holmes Creek at 41' wide, located in Charlotte, Vermont. Situated along Lake Champlain, the king post truss bridge is the shortest covered bridge in the state and is one of three king post truss covered bridges left standing in the state. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1933, and the roof was replaced in 2002. Registered to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. George Hockensmith built Switzer covered bridge in 1855. Spanning 126’ across the North Elkhorn Creek, in Switzer, Kentucky. The Howe Truss bridge has a sawtooth edge at each entrance. The first restoration of the Switzer covered bridge was in 1906. Nearly 50 years later, the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1954. Added to the National Register of Historic Places 1974. The second restoration took place in 1990. A few years later, in 1997 the bridge was washed away during severe flooding and rebuilt again in 1998. In 1856, the flooding washed away a covered bridge crossing the East Branch of the Ausable River. The new bridge, known as Jay Covered Bridge, was built in 1857 for $1200 and was left uncovered until 1858. The bridge unfortunately has a history of being heavily damaged. In 1953, a heavy truck fell through the bridge, causing 80' of the 175' bridge needing to be replaced. Shortly after the bridge was shortened and reinforced. The Howe truss bridge was almost taken off its concrete abutments in 1976 when an ice jam formed on the river. Once again the bridge was damaged in 1985 when a tractor trailer lost its brakes. Jay Covered Bridge was officially closed vehicular traffic in May 1997.  The only remaining covered bridge in Essex County, it is also the Northernmost Covered Bridge in New York State, and one of three Howe truss design covered bridges in New York. The Frazier Covered Bridge was built in 1888 spans the Little Muncy Creek in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The 60' Burr arch truss covered bridge is also called the Lairdsville Covered Bridge. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Built in 1875, the Josiah Hess Covered bridge spans Huntington Creek, in Fishing Creek Township, in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The Burr Arch truss bridge is 110' long and cost $1349.50 to build. Built in 1860, the Livingston Manor Bride, originally known as the Mott Flats Bridge, and later the Vantran Bridge. Crosses the Willoemoc Creek in Rockland, Sullivan County, New York and stands at 117’ long. The bridge was closed and abandon in 1972. While being rehabbed in 1984 the lattice truss bridge had a laminated arch system added.
